A 92-year-old woman died after she was involved in a two-vehicle crash in Hilo.
She was identified as Masako Okano of Hilo.
At about 12:22 p.m. Sunday, police said, a 2000 Ford pickup truck driven by a 28-year-old Hauula man was traveling south on Komohana Street and started to make a left turn onto Ponahawai Street when it was struck by a 2012 Nissan sedan driven by a 25-year-old Pahoa woman, traveling north on Komohana.
Okano, the front-seat passenger of the sedan, was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly before 4 p.m.
Police said the sedan driver was also taken to the hospital, where she was treated for her injuries and released. The pickup driver was not hurt.
Police opened a negligent-homicide investigation and are seeking witnesses to the crash. Those with information on the collision are asked to call Officer Clarence Acob at 961-2293 or CrimeStoppers at 961-8300.
This is the 24th traffic-related fatality on Hawaii island, compared with 16 at the same time last year.
