Former HPD sergeant gets 60 days for accidental shooting

COURTESY HONOLULU POLICE DEPARTMENT

Retired Honolulu police sergeant Anson Kimura has been ordered to 60 days in jail Wednesday for accidentally shooting a bartender when his gun went off at a Honolulu bar while he was off duty.

A state judge ordered retired Honolulu police sergeant Anson Kimura to 60 days in jail Wednesday for accidentally shooting a bartender when his gun went off at a Honolulu bar while he was off duty.

The 60-day jail term is part of a four-year probation sentence Circuit Judge Colette Garibaldi handed Kimura for second-degree assault. Kimura, 57, pleaded guilty to the charge in August.

Garibaldi also ordered Kimura to perform 200 hours of community service.

Honolulu police said Kimura and the woman, a bartender at the South King Street bar, are friends and that Kimura shot her in the stomach in April last year when his gun went of accidentally. Kimura retired the following month, before the Honolulu Police Department completed its internal investigation into the shooting.

Kimura’s lawyer told Garibaldi that the gun went off while Kimura was checking to see if it was loaded.

    that’s it….?

  2. PTF says:

I can’t understand why a gun was brought to a bar in the first place

  3. Bully says:

The gun went off when he was checking to see if it was loaded, why were you checking to see if it was loaded. Probably drunk and playing with his gun. Idiot. Sixty days in jail for being stupid.

  4. pgkemp says:

i don’t think they never did mention the name of the korean wahine who got shot…..

  5. Ronin006 says:

He conveniently retired with full pay and benefits one month following the shooting while it was still being investigated. His conviction should have resulted in loss of pension, but not in this state.

  6. justmyview371 says:

You shouldn’t be sentenced to jail for an accident.

    • SHOPOHOLIC says:

Sixty days a bit much for a non malicious stoopid move. But then again, what about any citizen that did the same?

    • DeltaDag says:

Unless there was some overriding need for Kimura to “see if it was loaded” then and there in the bar, the sentence seems fair and maybe even lenient. He was either unfamiliar with his weapon and shouldn’t have been carrying it, or he was impaired enough not to be able to handle it safely. Either way, it reflects badly on the judgment of a member of “Honolulu’s Finest,” especially given he’s far from being a rookie cop.

    • HRS134 says:

It was “negligence”, not an “accident”. The double action revolver he was carrying has a trigger pull of 11 to 13 pounds. That’s a lot of pressure needed to “accidentally” discharge the revolver. 🙁 Besides, why did he need to “check” the revolver in the bar?

Appears that he may have been a bit impaired in the photo. Perhaps he was impaired while at the bar as well? No reason for having an unholstered firearm at the bar.

  7. HOSSANA says:

Looks like he is still inebriated when he took that picture. Geez, is that the face of the Honolulu Police Dept????

  8. makiki123 says:

How is that lady that got shot doing? Never heard a follow up story.

  9. fiveo says:

Mixing alcohol and a gun is a dangerous combination. I myself has seen a weapon discharged accidentally when the person had been drinking and not focused on what he was
doing. Wish SA would do a story on the woman who was seriously injured. Being shot in the gut as she was is a very serious wound. Do hope she is doing okay.
