Dylan McCaffrey, one of the top high school quarterbacks in the nation, has accepted an invitation to play in the inaugural Polynesian Bowl. McCaffrey, the brother of 2016 Heisman Trophy finalist Christian McCaffrey, is a Michigan commitment who is ranked as the No. 2 pocket passer and No. 45 overall by ESPN.

McCaffrey joins fellow quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (Saint Louis School, Alabama commitment), who is ranked as the nation’s top dual-threat quarterback and No. 55 overall by ESPN.

“These are elite quarterbacks for an elite game,” Polynesian Football Hall of Fame co-founder and chairman Jesse Sapolu said. “It will be a historic night at Aloha Stadium for the inaugural Polynesian Bowl.”

The Polynesian Bowl will feature 84 high school seniors of Polynesian heritage and other ancestries Jan. 21 at Aloha Stadium.

Saiki wins national titles

Former University of Hawaii tennis player Stu Saiki won the singles and doubles titles at the USTA Men’s 55 Clay Court National Championship on Oct. 6 in Savannah, Ga.

Saiki, the second seed in the singles draw, knocked off top-seeded Mark Vines 6-1, 6-1 in the final. He teamed with Derek Segal to edge Vines and Wesley Cash 7-5, 7-5 in the doubles final.

With the wins, Saiki, now based in Orlando, Fla., and the son of former U.S. Representative Pat Saiki, is the nation’s top ranked player in Men’s 55 singles and doubles.

Florence upset in Portugal

Hawaii’s John John Florence, the top-ranked surfer in the world, was upset by Brazil’s Jadson Andre in round one of the Meo Rip Curl Pro in Portugal on Tuesday.

Florence was one of four local surfers defeated in the first round, joined by Keanu Asing, Sebastian Zietz and Dusty Payne. All four will now have to surf in the elimination second round.

Australia’s Josh Kerr posted a 15.90 to earn the highest score of the day. The event will resume today at 8 a.m., conditions permitting.
