Maui County on Saturday lifted the shark warning in effect in South Maui after a woman was seriously injured by a suspected shark bite Friday morning.
Shark warning signs, posted along the coastline between Kalama Park and Kamaole Beach Park III, were taken down at noon, the county said by email.
At 6 a.m. Saturday, law enforcement officers with the state Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement and lifeguards from the Maui County’s, Ocean Safety division patrolled the waters in the 2-mile-long warning zone and did not see any sharks.
The Fire Department’s Air 1 helicopter also conducted a reconnaissance flight over the affected warning area and surrounding ocean waters and did not see any sharks as of just before noon.
$130,100 grant to aid drug fight
Kauai County has received an initial $130,100 grant to set up a unit to shut down drug houses.
“The number one complaint I receive from our citizens is that law enforcement does not act swiftly enough to address the longstanding problem of drug houses in our neighborhoods,” County Prosecutor Justin Koller said in a statement Friday. “This will be a big step towards addressing that.”
The prosecutor’s office will receive the money from Hawaii’s Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program. The funds are provided by the U.S. Justice Department and administered by the state Crime Prevention and Justice Assistance Division.
The grant will provide $130,100 during the upcoming year. The Drug Nuisance Abatement Unit will consist of investigators, attorneys and clerks and will use state nuisance abatement laws, which give the county the power “to go quickly and directly after the tenants, landlords, or owners of these houses and require them to take care of the problem or face eviction, contempt charges, financial liens or more serious consequences,” Kollar said.
