A Kapaa man has been charged in the shooting of his roommate at their home on Kauai.
Jeffrey Scot Simpson, 57, was charged with second-degree attempted murder, two counts of first-degree reckless endangering and carrying or use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges Thursday before Kauai District Judge Jonathan Chun.
Simpson is being held in lieu of $53,000 cash bail and is scheduled to make his initial appearance Oct. 26 at Circuit Court.
The shooting occurred Sunday at a home on Kamalu Road. Officers found a 52-year-old man lying on the floor in his bedroom with gunshot wounds to his face and chest.
He was transported to Wilcox Hospital and flown to the Queen’s Medical Center in serious but stable condition.
Police said Simpson lives with the victim and other roommates.
Search is on for free-diver
The Coast Guard began searching Friday for a missing free-diver off Maui.
The diver is 40-year-old Josh Goodwin, the Coast Guard says. He was last seen in Hana.
He was expected to swim out to a friend about 200 yards offshore but never arrived.
Goodwin is 6 feet 2 inches tall with dark hair. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt.
The Coast Guard launched a helicopter and the cutter Kittiwake to look for Goodwin. Divers and aircraft from the Maui Fire and Police departments also were searching.
