Oahu natives Keanu Asing and Carissa Moore won the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro France, respectively, on Wednesday at Seignosse/Hossegor/Capbreton, Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France.
Both won comfortably in the finals. Moore topped Australian Tyler Wright 16.63-9.83, while Asing’s 13.94 almost doubled Gabriel Medina’s 7.00. Asing defeated world No. 1 John John Florence, another Hawaii native, before taking down Medina — the world No.2.
The win for the three-time World Surf League champion Moore was her first of the 2016 season, while this is Asing’s first WSL victory.
Local duo second in USTA tournament
Tristen Bryant-Otake and April Wong placed second in the girls doubles draw in the United States Tennis Association National Selection Tournament held last weekend at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park.
Bryant-Otake of Kailua and Wong of Kailua-Kona entered the tournament as the third seeded team in the girls 18 doubles draw. They knocked off second-seeded Katie Chang and Elena Van Linge of California in the semifinals before falling to Jennifer Kerr and Maia Sung of California 8-4 in the final on Monday.
Jake Sands of Pacific Palisades, Calif., ranked 21st nationally, won the boys singles title. Seventh-ranked Hannah Zhao of San Diego, Calif., claimed the girls singles crown. Cody Lin and Ivan Thamma of California won the boys doubles title.
BYU-Hawaii falls to Fresno Pacific
The BYU-Hawaii volleyball team lost to Fresno Pacific 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 25-17 at the Cannon Activities Center on Wednesday night.
Karah Mitchell led the Sunbirds with her double-double of 15 kills and 17 digs. Jasmine Phoolka had a double-double of her own with 10 kills and 12 digs. BYUH’s Leilani Adolpho had 10 kills and 16 digs.
Lacy Lange and Sinamoni Tonga each had a match-high 16 kills for the Seasiders.
BYU-Hawaii dropped to 4-13 overall and 2-6 in PacWest play, while Fresno Pacific improved to 5-7, 3-5.
