Prosecutors charged a 26-year-old man Wednesday in the stabbing death of a 5-year-old boy and the critical injury of a 29-year-old woman.
Waiser Walter was charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder.
Bail was set at $1 million.
Walter, who lived with the boy and woman and other relatives at a Lime Street apartment, allegedly stabbed them multiple times Monday afternoon in the apartment.
The two victims were taken to the hospital, where the boy died and the woman remains hospitalized.
2 are critically injured in Maui car crash
Two Wailuku residents were in critical condition following a head-on collision Tuesday night in Kahului.
Maui police said the crash occurred at 10:21 p.m. on Kahului Beach Road south of Kanaloa Avenue.
A gray 2000 Nissan truck, driven by a 34-year-old man, was traveling north on Kahului Beach Road when it crossed the yellow median line and collided with a silver 1992 Mazda van, driven by a 48-year-old man, traveling in the opposite direction.
Neither vehicle had any passengers. The drivers were taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Big Isle resident accused of threats, shots
A 42-year-old Puna man has been charged with threatening a Pahoa man and firing a handgun Sunday night in Hilo.
Robert Lee Segobia, 42, was charged Tuesday with first-degree terroristic threatening, second-degree reckless endangering and improper handling of a pistol. His bail was set at $27,500.
At 11 p.m., a 31-year-old man reported that a man had threatened him with a handgun on the 80 block of Kanoelehua Avenue and then fled on foot.
Several minutes later, two gunshots were heard coming from the area where the gunman had fled.
Hilo police found Segobia hiding in a hedge along Kamehameha Avenue. They found a handgun and two spent shell casings in an abandoned parking lot.
Teen hiker is rescued after 25-foot fall
Firefighters rescued a 16-year-old boy who fell about 25 feet at Laie Falls on Wednesday.
Emergency Medical Services said the boy suffered serious injuries after reportedly jumping into the pool.
Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins said in a news release that 17 personnel from six fire companies, including the Air 1 helicopter, responded to the 2:07 p.m. call regarding a hiker in distress on the Laie Falls Trail. Rescue personnel found the boy and two companions at the base of the falls at 3:20 p.m.
The boy was airlifted to a nearby landing zone, where he was transferred at 3:35 p.m. to paramedics, who transported him by ambulance to a trauma center.
The two companions were uninjured and hiked out on their own, according to the Fire Department.
