Morimoto in The Modern Honolulu will serve its last meals on Dec. 8.
Morimoto, the namesake restaurant of celebrity chef Masaharu Morimoto, will serve its last meals at The Modern Honolulu on Dec. 8.
“The Modern and Morimoto have been on a six-year journey to offer a unique dining experience and exceed the expectations of our guests,” Morimoto said, in a statement.
A new, yet-unnamed restaurant will be established in the Morimoto space, and “we are pleased that all of the current employees will be a part of the new restaurant,” said Kelly Hoen, general manager of the Modern, in a prepared statement.
Morimoto will open two new concepts at the Pacific Beach Hotel, which is undergoing a $115 million renovation project, and will reopen as ‘Alohilani Resort at Waikiki Beach next summer.
Morimoto Asia will feature Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Malay and other types of Asian street food, while Momosan wil be a beer garden serving ramen, yakitori and a variety of small plates.

AAAARRRGGGG, say it isn’t so. Guess, I’ll have to go to the new restaurants when they open.

You haven’t been to a high end, five star restaurant? Shocking!
The Morimoto space at the Modern was badly in need of sprucing up… if you’re paying that much to dine there, the furnishings shouldn’t be tattered and worn. Expiry of a lease or licensing agreement would explain why they weren’t investing in keeping it fresh.
Not surprised, it was almost a bait and switch for Chef Morimoto with the change in hotel ownership, not to mention The Modern didn’t have the same cache as The Edition.
Golly, where are the Obamas going to eat??? Maybe get a pizza across the street?
