Maui man killed in car wash accident

A 44 year-old Lahaina man was killed Monday while trying to enter a car after the vehicle exited the car wash.

Police said Scott Kawabata was attempting to park a Hyundai SUV at 8:35 a.m. at the Wash It Hawaii in Lahaina. He was partially out of the vehicle when it inadvertently reversed back through the car wash, hitting the interior of the facility several times. Kawabata was ejected, and the Hyundai then struck another SUV stopped at the entrance of the car wash.

Kawabata died at the scene. No one else was injured.
