A man and two children with ties to Maui are dead after an apparent murder-suicide in their Oregon apartment Wednesday afternoon.
Police in Beaverton, Ore., said Lakalo Kawika Enfield, 36, shot and killed his two children: Lakalo Enfield, 6, and Lehua Enfield, 8.
Enfield then shot himself, said officer Mike Rowe, Beaverton police spokesman. Rowe said police know that the family had left Maui, but didn’t know how long they had been residing in Beaverton.
Rowe said Enfield’s Liezl Enfield, 33, was in the Redwood Creek Apartments at the time of the shooting. The wife heard the shots, saw what happened and then left the apartment to get help, he said.
The victims’ bodies were found by a female relative, police said.
Sabrina Hayes said she rushed outside to help Liezl Enfield after she heard screams, the Associated Press reported. She said the woman had blood on her hands and had been inside the house at the time of the shooting.
“My heart dropped because I have kids,” she said.
The Enfields had lived in the apartment complex since July.
A Beaverton school district spokesman, Maureen Wheeler, said Lakalo and Lehua Enfield were in the first and second grade, respectively, at Greenway Elementary School.
Wheeler said the kids had recently been enrolled in the school. Counselors were sent to the school to talk to bereaved schoolmates.
Rowe said Beaverton police had responded to a domestic disturbance at the Enfield home Sept. 29. There were no signs of a physical assault, and afterward the husband left to stay in Medford, Ore.
Rowe said police in Oregon are mandated to make an arrest at a domestic call only if there are signs of a physical assault.
