Hawaii failed to make the cut at last week’s USGA Men’s State Team championship played at Country Club of Birmingham, Ala.
Moanalua senior Jun Ho Won led Hawaii, shooting 79-74 the first two days. He was followed by Manoa Cup champion Tyler Ota (79-81) and Punahou’s Andrew Chin (76-85).
Their team score was 13-over-par 155 each of the first two days. The cut came at 12-over 296. The winning team was Michigan, which shot 137 in the final round to finish at 4-under 422.
UH’s Leung ties for second
Rainbow Wahine senior Izzy Leung tied for second Sunday in the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate played at The Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
Leung birdied three of her last five holes to close with a 72 and an even-par total of 216 over the three-day event. It was her 10th career top-10 finish. Santa Clara’s Annie Freeman was the medalist — and only player under par — at 210.
Hawaii finished fourth in the team standings, shooting 299 the final day for an 892 total — 10 strokes behind champion Santa Clara.
UH senior Daezsa Tomas earned her third career top 10, finishing in a tie for 10th at 222. Santa Clara sophomore Kristen Le, a Punahou graduate, was also 10th. Raquel Ek, another UH senior, tied for 15th at 224.
Hawaii co-hosts the Pac-12 Preview at Nanea next, Oct. 24-25 on Hawaii island. Its fall season ends at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational, Nov. 1-3 at Leilehua.
