A 23-year-old man who died Sunday in a possible alcohol-related, one-car crash in South Kona was identified Tuesday by police as Jackson Mathers of Milolii.
An autopsy found he died of injuries from the crash, Hawaii island police said.
Police said Mathers was heading south on Mamalahoa Highway in Honalo when he lost control in a turn near the 114-mile marker and crashed into a utility pole at about 2:35 a.m. Sunday. He was ejected from a 2013 Subaru station wagon and sustained critical injuries. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he died.
Police say speed, inattention and alcohol may be factors in the crash.
Brush fire burns 7 acres, affects jet’s passengers
A brush fire sent plumes of smoke drifting within range of at least one Hawaiian Airlines flight waiting to take off at Kahului Airport on Maui on Tuesday morning, causing coughing among several passengers.
The flight took off for Honolulu without incident, but the blaze burned an estimated 7 acres near the Kahului heliport, authorities said.
No damage or injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is undetermined, fire officials said.
Firefighters were on the scene at about 11:30 a.m. and found about an acre of brush burning near Kala Road and Kuhea Street on the east side of the airport.
In a second blaze Tuesday, Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto said Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar conducted a scheduled cane burn between 3 and 5 a.m. near the area. It is unclear whether the two were connected.
