Hilo’s B.J. Penn, who was scheduled to fight Ricardo Lamas in the main event of a card scheduled for Oct. 15, has been forced to withdraw from the bout due to an injury, according to MMAjunkie.com.
Penn hasn’t fought in 27 months and was inducted into the UFC hall of fame in July 2015. He was suspended by USADA in June for six months (retroactive to March) for violating an IV ban.
Also, Waianae’s Russell Doane has taken a fight on five days’ notice and will compete in the opening bout of UFC 204 on Saturday against Mirsad Bektic on pay-per-view.
Doane (14-6, 2-3 UFC) is on a three-fight losing streak. He steps in to replace Jeremy Kennedy, who had to withdraw from the fight after replacing Bektic’s original opponent, Arnold Allen, who also suffered an injury.
Bektic is 10-0 overall and 3-0 in the UFC. The fight will take place at 145 pounds.
