A 63-year-old man was critically injured Monday morning after he lost control of his bicycle and was run over by a truck in Makawao, Maui.
According to police, the man was riding north on Makawao Avenue near Kee Road when he failed to get around a bend in the road and slid into the opposing lane. He was struck by an oncoming Dodge Ram truck operated by a 58-year-old man.
The cyclist, identified as a visitor from Omaha, Neb., was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
Puna woman charged in theft of 2 vehicles
Hawaii island police have charged a 35-year-old Puna woman in connection with the theft of two vehicles earlier this month.
In the first incident, a 51-year-old man told police that he was talking to three people in a parking lot in Honokaa on Sept. 14 when one of them, the suspect, entered his pickup truck and drove away. The vehicle was recovered the next day in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision in Puna.
On Sept. 20, a 20-year-old Puna woman reported that someone had taken her Ford sedan from an Ainaloa subdivision residence. Police located the vehicle on Government Beach Road in Puna the next day and arrested the driver.
Mandy Alicuben was charged Sept. 22 with two counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, as well as an unrelated bench warrant for violating terms of a deferred plea. Her bail was set at $20,000.
