Down by 21 points to start the game and by two touchdowns late in the third quarter, Kailua still believed.
The host Surfriders rallied to stun No. 7 Mililani 34-28 on Friday night, sending Kailua’s faithful into delirium as their team (3-3) clinched an OIA playoff berth.
“Down 21, in high school, they rarely come back because they haven’t been there before,” coach Joseph Wong said of his team’s second-quarter deficit. “Tonight, what they displayed, that’s just character right there.”
Senior quarterback Mark Lagazo — a running back pressed into service at signal-caller all season because of a key injury — threw four touchdown passes, including a 24-yarder to tight end Christian Mejia for the go-ahead points with 1:29 to play.
Lagazo went 15-for-27 for 224 yards and no interceptions. His Trojans counterpart, Dillon Gabriel, had two picks, part of a five-turnover, penalty-ridden night for Mililani (4-2). The night started well for the visitors, as Andrew Valladares took the opening kickoff 89 yards to the house.
“I had to battle from adversity, step up for the team,” Lagazo said. “I gotta thank my O-line for protecting me, and my receivers running for each other.”
Receiver Tanner Wright had TD grabs of 21 and 67 yards to key the comeback. Those were the 6-foot-4 junior’s only receptions of the game.
“Mark … he (played) a hell of a game today,” Wright said. “The defense held them, special teams did good. Overall I think we did really good to come back in the second half.”
Kailua failed on a tying 2-point conversion attempt after the latter of Wright’s scores, meaning the Surfriders trailed 28-26 and had to conjure some more magic with only 4:27 to play.
Mililani running back Darius Muasau (102 yards rushing) punished Kailua early with big yardage on the ground, but he fumbled after a 22-yard gain and Kailua recovered on its own 33 with 3:28 to go.
Kailua faced fourth and 6 in its own territory, but Lagazo found Solomon Farley for the first down and they connected again to get into Trojans territory. Combined with a personal foul, Kailua was in great shape at the 24.
After two incompletions, Lagazo lofted a ball to the 6-4 Mejia in the dead center of the end zone for the tight end’s second TD grab of the game.
“If we play together and do our assignments, offense, defense, special teams, we can compete with anybody,” Wong said.
Gabriel passed for a 9-yard gain on first down, but Kailua then sacked him for a loss of nine. He went incomplete twice, including a deep heave, as Mililani turned it over on downs in the final minute. Kailua took a knee in Trojans territory to end it.
Mililani had several big plays, including a couple of scores, nullified by penalties.
“Give credit to Hauoli Wong and the coaching staff at Kailua,” Mililani coach Rod York said. “They took it to us, defended their home turf, showed heart, came back.
“The penalties were crazy. The turnovers hurt us. But that had a lot to do with Kailua playing well.”
