With a bye this coming weekend, the University of Hawaii football coaches will use the break to evaluate every position.
The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 1-3 following Saturday’s 47-28 loss to Arizona, their third defeat in as many non-conference road games.
“I think it’s the perfect time to look at all the positions,” head coach Nick Rolovich said. “We have what we have. There’s no free agency. The guys we’ve got, we’ve got to coach up.”
At the most visible position, quarterback Dru Brown replaced starter Ikaika Woolsey in the second half on Saturday, leading the Warriors to three consecutive touchdown drives. Brown lost a fumble on UH’s final possession. After the game, Rolovich said there will be a “pretty good discussion” about the quarterback position.
On Sunday, Rolovich expressed disappointment in the Warriors’ overall “execution” in the first four games.
“I think our fundamentals are lacking, and that falls on the coaches and myself as much as anybody,” Rolovich said. “If we can’t tackle and we can’t take care of the football, we’re not going to win games. It doesn’t matter what schemes we run.”
For the second time this season, Brown had the highest yards-per-rush average, at 6.6 yards against Arizona.
“I’m a little concerned at running back,” Rolovich said. UH’s three running backs averaged 4.1 yards per carry; the Wildcats’ backs averaged 7.1 yards.
Rolovich said freshman running back Freddie Holly, who was held out of the first four games, is an option to move to the active roster.
“We can still use him if we need to,” Rolovich said.
Rolovich said Elijah Tupai, who filled in at right guard when Leo Koloamatangi moved to tackle, is “getting good reps.” Tupai was held out of spring drills while recovering from an injury.
Rolovich also praised tight end Metuisela ‘Unga, who has been an effective blocker when the Warriors are in a power formation. ‘Unga did not play in the opener after violating a team rule.
“I think Tui ‘Unga has made a complete lifestyle change, a complete mentality change,” Rolovich said. “I’m very proud of him. He had a pretty good wake-up call, and he’s responded positively.”
While the players returned from Arizona on Sunday, eight assistant coaches remained on the mainland to recruit through Tuesday. Those coaches will return on Wednesday.
Rolovich said the Warriors are scheduled to resume practicing on Thursday ahead of the Mountain West Conference opener against Nevada on Oct. 1.
