Sixty-six Hawaii high school students are semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Nationwide, some 16,000 semifinalists are among 1.5 million students who entered the program by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen. Semifinalists were the highest-scoring entrants in each state, with the number of semifinalists in a state being proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
Finalists will be announced in February. And next spring, some 7,500 scholarships worth more than $33 million will be offered through the annual competition.
