Waianae man dies, Kaneohe man arrested after traffic collision
A 49-year-old Waianae man died and a 23-year-old man from Kaneohe was arrested following an early morning traffic collision in Nanakuli on Saturday.
According to police, the vehicle driven by the 49-year-old man was making a left turn from Nanakuli Avenue onto Farrington Highway when it was struck by the car driven by the younger man.
The older man suffered severe head and internal injuries and was transported in critical condition to an area hospital, where he later died.
The other driver was uninjured; a 25-year-old female passenger in the car complained of abdominal pain and was taken to the hospital in good condition.
Police found alcoholic beverages in the younger man’s vehicle and arrested the driver on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors.

And 5 hours later traffic was still packed up to Ma`ili Point. WTF You got the driver, he was drunk. Arrest him, sent the injured to the hospital and get the road cleaned up. What’s so hard about that??????
Dunno. What’s so hard about expressing a little compassion along with your angst?
You got it right kid. Thanks for showing the world there are still good people like you around. Have a good night!
Don’t get all hopped up on booze and then get behind the wheel of a car. Heard he was speeding.
Well tough someone died u monkey..this is hawaii not u.s mainland. .we care about our people.would somebody saying that about your family member? That’s what thought grow up..
Agreed, someone died and they have the killer in custody. So what’s taking so long to get traffic moving?
Stevetoo
It’s called investigation!! Hello were there no neither was I..stupid people now days..
The older driver was making a left turn indicating he must yield ro oncoming traffic? Not condoning driving under the influence of alcohol!
Its all about Steve, Steve, Steve. No one else, nothing else but STEVE, STEVE, STEVE. Eat it jerk.
silly statement. There is just as much compassion on the mainland as there is here. It is always amusing to see locals endlessly praise themselves as “unique.” They are not.
Allie your such a cry baby!! We locals have more compassion than mainland people I’ve lived there for years I’ve seen with my own eyes so kulikuli! That means shut up! Thank u
I have lived in North Dakota and am indigenous Mandan. No, local people here are about as compassionate and caring as people on the mainland.
There’s a traffic signal light at that intersection so someone ran the red light. I’m guessing it was the younger driver.
My heart and prayers goes out to the gentleman that lost his life this morning. People need to drive with Aloha. Can we get some cops on the road entering Nanakuli to show presence from 3:00 am to 6:30 am. Drunk drivers and people speeding around that time.
First, Condolences to the family of the deceased. Now, I’m guessing none of the involved have names ? I can understand not releasing the older person who is now deceased, [ for family notification purposes ] but what about the others ? They are of legal age, what’s the issue here ?
Unfortunately we all should drive extra defensively nowadays. You never know who can hit you. When the light turns green don’t just immediately start driving without checking the whole intersection to see that cars are coming to a stop. It seems that almost every cycle now the last car through is running the red light.
