Weather could be wet tonight at Aloha Stadium, rest of the week

NOAA / NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE

This satellite image taken early this afternoon shows cloudy skies over Oahu and a weather system approaching the state from the southeast.

Expect some tradewind showers and perhaps rainbows before sunset at the University of Hawaii football game tonight at Aloha Stadium.

Breezy tradewinds are blowing rain clouds over Oahu and a weather system over the state could mean heavier than usual rain, said Pete Donaldson, a meteorologist with the Honolulu office of the National Weather Service.

“It’s not going to be completely dry there,” Donaldson said.

Kickoff for the season-opening game against the University of Tennessee Martin is set for 6 p.m.

Enjoy the tradewinds while they last, another weather system approaching the islands from the southeast is expected to reduce the cooling breezes. The forecast for the state calls for muggy weather starting Sunday on the Big Island and moving up over the rest of the islands by Monday, Donaldson said.

The system is also expected to bring rainy weather through next week.

Stronger tradewinds should return by Thursday.

The forecast for Halawa, Honolulu and other areas along Oahu’s south shore calls for a 50 percent chance of rain tonight.

The weather should be mostly sunny Sunday. But the chance of rain increases again Sunday night through the end of the week, when partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers are expected.

Lows tonight will be between 66 and 75 degrees and winds should be from the northeast at 10 to 15 mph.
