The folks who champion ocean management have reason to pat themselves on the back: The federal government has declared nine of 14 humpback whale species no longer endangered, including the one we humans like to watch off Hawaii’s shores.
The recovery in the species population was nicely timed for the environmental advocates in town for the World Conservation Congress, though some are convinced the humpback still needs protection.

Movie about Inouye will come with campaign food
Sept. 7 was his actual birthday, but a Friday seems a better day for most working folks to contemplate attending the premiere of a new documentary, “Senator Inouye: Told by His Son.”
And that son — the late senator’s namesake, Daniel K. Inouye Jr. — will be there in person, as well onscreen, starting at 6 p.m. Friday, Kakaako Room, Ward Warehouse second floor.
Beef stew (reminiscent of all those campaign bashes), cake and other refreshments will be served. Not surprisingly, it’s sponsored by the Democratic Party of Hawaii. Sale ends today for tickets at the advance rate, $35, available online: tinyurl.com/znkblc2. At the door, it will be $40.
