Boy listed in critical condition after bicycle struck by large truck in Kalihi

An 11-year-old boy was reported in critical condition Wednesday after his bicycle was struck by a large truck in Kalihi, according to police and city Emergency Medical Services.

The accident occurred about 1:40 p.m. at Waiakamilo Road and North King Street, EMS said.

Police said the boy was crossing Waiakamilo Road in the south crosswalk when he was struck by the truck, which was turning onto southbound Waiakamilo Road from eastbound North King Street.

Paramedics treated the boy and transported him to a hospital in critical condition.

Honolulu police closed southbound lanes of Waiakamilo Road at King Street as they investigated the accident just before 2 p.m.

All lanes were reopened just before 5 p.m.

Two fire trucks, two ambulances, several police vehicles and one big mess. Hope the boy gets well soon!

Hope he fully recovers soon. TV news said he wasn’t wearing a helmet. Isn’t it required of young riders? Maybe his injuries wouldn’t be so severe if he wore one. Hey kids, wear a helmet when riding your bikes and be safe out there.

In this case doubt wearing a helmet would have protected the child from the blunt force trauma of the large truck hitting the child. In Hawaii, many drivers don’t give a rip about pedestrians or pedestrians right of way in the crosswalk. Anyone who walks on Honolulu streets, EVEN when abiding walk/don’t walk signs, paying attention to traffic, etc.; has to often jump out of the way of cars making turns whether on green or red who figure hitting a pedestrian has no negative consequences other than wiping blood off of their vehicle. Would like to see a picture of the truck this guy was driving and the name of the driver as well. Media should take pictures of the scene, including the Truck and is location relative to the accident. Just saw on KITV or Hawaiinewsnow online of the other Kalihi accident that resulted in a death between a car and large truck, however the picture and story clearly show the car crossed a double yellow line into the oncoming truck because the car driver was impatient and did not want to wait for other cars waiting for a pedestrian to cross the street.

Have mentioned this before and will say it again. I see so many bikers riding on the sidewalk and is behind the car that will turn right. When the light turns green, the biker passes the car and zooms through the green light (with no walk hand lighted, because the biker doesn’t stop to press the walk button). I’m not saying this happened, but I see it so much (even with joggers), its a collision waiting to happen. In the end it behooves everyone to obey the walk and don’t walk signal. It is the most important signal for the crossers. Don’t depend on the drivers. Assume they don’t see you. With all that said, I hope the kid recovers.
