A 59-year-old Oregon woman died Wednesday after becoming distressed while scuba diving off Poipu, Kauai, police said.
The woman, who has not been identified, was diving with a tour group at about 9:30 a.m., police said. She was brought to the tour boat unresponsive, and others performed CPR as the boat returned to Kukuiula Small Boat Harbor.
Firefighters continued CPR and paramedics took her to Wilcox Hospital, where she died.
It was Kauai’s ninth drowning this year.
Shark sighting closes beach
Ocean Safety officials closed Kauai’s Haena Beach to swimming Wednesday afternoon due to a shark sighting.
Lifeguards reported seeing a 5- to 6-foot Galapagos shark at about 3 p.m.
Signs have been posted to warn beachgoers. Officials advise the public to stay out of the water. Lifeguards will assess the beach this morning before deciding whether to reopen it.
Bicycle rider hit by motorist
A 22-year-old Kauai man remained hospitalized Wednesday after he was struck while riding a bicycle on Kuamoo Road in Wailua on Tuesday.
Police said the bicyclist was hit by a sedan driven by a 20-year-old Kapaa woman at about 6 p.m. heading west on Kuamoo Road, roughly 1 mile from Kuhio Highway. The man, who is from Kapaa, was traveling east in the westbound lane.
The bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Wilcox Hospital.
