Syngenta will be out, but not gone
There are folks on Kauai and Oahu who surely are fine with the news that Syngenta is pulling up stakes in its seed-crop operation here. The agribusiness companies have been in the thick of battles over genetically modified organism (GMO) controversies for some time. Perhaps some are happy to show them the door.
But be careful what you wish for, people. Syngenta is looking for someone willing to take on the thousands of acres of land it owns or leases. Company officials have said they want to contract with the new owner so Syngenta can continue its operations to some degree.
The question is: To what degree will they continue? A new owner could make other plans for some of the land. Kauai and Oahu residents will need to stay alert for word of those.

By contacting with a third party, they can try to shield themselves from accountability to workers, regulators and public health. Will we see any of this in coming years?
Another question is, where will Roz Baker get her campaign cash from now? Will Syngenta lobbyists continue to shower her with money?
Is this why has Roz has coddled the multinational agrochemical seed corporations all these years?
It’s surprising what a small part of the economy they agro-chemical “giants” are, just $150 million per year.
Healthcare plans in Hawaii total over $6 billion per year (not including Medicare, DOH, veterans, military or out of pocket costs), so why has Baker shown no interest in providing effective oversight of local health plans?
Maybe she could get Syngenta to take over the Maui hospitals if the kaiser deal keeps unraveling.
