Dillon Gabriel ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as No. 6 Mililani pulled out a 31-28 win over No. 7 Farrington on Saturday night at John Kauinana Stadium.
Mililani remained unbeaten in the OIA Red (3-0) despite three interceptions by Gabriel, all in the first half.
“Those were my fault,” Trojans coach Rod York said.
Farrington took its first loss after two conference wins. The visitors played from behind all night. They were trailing 7-0 when Isaiah Taumua made a sensational pick in the flat and returned the ball 70 yards for a touchdown. The extra-point kick missed, however, and the Govs never took the lead.
Another big play on defense by Farrington came on Iosefo Ah Ching’s pick with 34 seconds left in the first half, outmuscling Andrew Vallasdares for the ball. The Govs were at the Mililani 29-yard line, but stalled at the 24 as passes by Bishop Rapoza and Justin Uahinui fell incomplete in the end zone.
Kailiohu Kila rocketed up the middle for a 60-yard touchdown to open Mililani’s lead to 14-6 with 9:18 left in the third quarter.
“That was there for us and our line made the blocks,” York said.
The Trojan defense limited Challen Faamatau to 58 hard-earned yards on 21 carries. Farrington had its first scoring drive in the third quarter as Rapoza got hot. Faamatau worked the right side again and again before Rapoza hit Mosi Alaivanu-Afe with a quick pass, and the senior raced to the end zone for a 33-yard touchdown.
Faamatau’s PAT run tied the game at 14 with 4:46 left in the third.
Field position favored Mililani after that. A punt by Kainalu Wong pinned the Govs, and Gabriel ran the read option for a 3-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter for a 21-14 lead.
After Damien Santiago drilled a 29-yard field goal, the Trojans led 24-14 with 7:27 remaining.
Farrington answered with another scoring toss from Rapoza to Alaivanu-Afe, a 22-yard strike, to pull within 24-20 with 3:54 left.
Another read-option keeper by Gabriel, a 27-yard run, gave Mililani a 31-20 lead with 2:36 to go.
“When the pressure was high, we lost our technique,” Okimoto said.
Rapoza connected with TJ Tautolo for a 12-yard TD pass with 1:29 left, but Mililani recovered the on-side kick and churned out a first down to run out the clock.
Backup QB Cy Kuboyama-Hayashi was a key receiver with six catches for 101 yards.
