The 10th annual ‘Onipa‘a (stand firm) celebration will honor the 178th birthday of Hawaii’s Queen Liliuokalani.
The event, starting at 10 a.m. Sept. 4 on the Iolani Palace grounds, will feature music, cultural demonstrations, crafts, hula and food.
An interfaith service will be held at noon. A tribute to the deposed monarch will be made through Hawaiian chants, starting at 3:30 p.m.
Admission to the palace will be free on that day.
A walking tour titled “Mai Poina: The Overthrow,” which retraces four pivotal days leading up to and including the overthrow of the kingdom, is scheduled for 4, 4:20, 4:40 and 5 p.m. Sept. 4, 5, 10 and 11. Each tour will start at the Ewa end of the Hawaii State Library. Reservations are required. For more information visit hawaiiponoi.info or call 534-8880.
The celebration’s sponsor, Hawai‘i Pono‘i Coalition, was founded in 2007 to educate residents and tourists about the “true history” and the Native Hawaiian people, according to its website. The state Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Friends of Iolani Palace are among its many members.
