Internal investigation will be closed with the following notation: “It appeared that the Uber driver was casing the Chief Kealoha’s house and would have potentially driven off with the Chief’s new mailbox as he pulled up to the curb of the Chief’s house. Officer had reasonable, good faith belief that he was acting according to legal authority preventing crime of moral turpitude from occurring.” CASE CLOSED!

“It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool…” No No No better to blurt it out and make sure everyone knows who a fool is. LOL
I was trying to be more subtle and non-threatening.
Oh or even better in he old saying. “No Shame make “A”
If “no charges have been filed”, why waste the time and effort to investigate?
desperate for news
Policy. Once an initial report of a crime has been made It has to be investigated.
Rookie cop and already full of ‘tude and getting off on the wrong foot? Ah, the sordid power seduction of that metal badge on your chest…
Evidently HPD didn’t make reading the S-A’s recent series on police misconduct mandatory department wide for a learning experience.
Rookie has “big body, small brain” issues and will cost the City (us) legal fees and settlements down the road. Is there a probationary period for new hires, where you must keep your okole out of trouble?
Uber driver maybe like the rapist.
Naahhhh. Just following the lead of lolo HPD officers who assault family members, etc. Good enough for HPD, good enough for the average citizen.
They just don’t make them like they used to…
If they did, there would be a lot less crime! They used to take punks out back and give them what their parents should have!
Thanks for checking in, Donald Trump.
They still do that in rural areas in this country. Kids call us sir, ma’am, do you need help, …….
Just another example of a bad cop. Something seems wrong with the way in which HPD is selecting their recruits to begin with
in addition to their leadership problem among the department and being able to weed out the bad apples. I have never seen so many cops getting into trouble in such a short time in all my years here. Amazing really.
A critical piece that is missing in the article is whether or not the officer was on or off duty when the alleged assault occurred.
True. HOWEVER…when one is a sworn police officer representing the C&C and people of HNL then it’s not just a 9-5 job…it’s a way of life. After all, they’re expected to carry their guns when “off duty”, right?
If they can’t get that through their heads, then maybe they should not have accepted the responsibility.
right…. they also get “standard of conduct” pay which means they get extra money for following the rules off-duty…… damn never had that in my day….. IA would just come to your house unannounced call you stupid take you in, interview you then tell you good home….now they have all kinds of rules and procedures and rights.
I heard the story last night. He was off duty. What bothers me is why the headline so strong. If any off duty person in any profession was involved, you wouldn’t have that in the headlines. I guess they are just trying to sell papers!
There is no “off duty” when you accept, VOLUNTARILY, the life of a police officer. After all, you carry the gun and badge 24-7 right??
Right and the cops are still getting paid while “off duty”.
Did he use the gun? Huh.
Why do you think that matters?
thats a lie. Are you still a plumber, banker, teacher etc. when you are not working. Yes, by profession but you just a neighbor where I live. They have a private life. He more likely than not will not be a member of HPD much longer. But, thats their problem.
So by your logic, an American diplomat working in a foreign country, when “off duty”, can go running around p-i-s-s drunk, yelling, throwing bottles and behave boorishly? He no longer represents the USA because he’s “off duty”???
And as papio5 said above, which I even forgot about, HPD cops DO GET PAID when “off duty”. Or should we now say “out of uniform”???
No just act like responsible citizens
The starting pay for an HPD rookie is far higher than the starting pay for your average teacher. No danger for the teacher? Think about this: teachers are faced with the possibility of violence every day when they enter a classroom filled with students who have parents that feel entitled to everything and anything, do not discipline their children, and live in a society that is highly litigious. Teachers are assaulted in one way or another almost everyday. Special education assistants are bitten, pummeled, scratched on a regular basis. In short, crime begins at home and the only way to change that is through education. There is NO excuse for a police force in any municipality that is supported through taxes to behave in a manner not befitting the uniform they wear. The days of joining up to protect and serve and make a difference has long gone to the wayside, instead its made up of people who don’t want to work at anything else and stand to make a good salary with intangible benefits, sorry but its the truth.
No not true ryu.
Why do you keep trying to cover up, Nunacoolie? You work for Krook Cadwell???
IRT SHOPOHOLIC: “Nunacoolie”, this is very funny! put a smile on my face. lol!
rytsuru – Typical shibai post, mark of the new, rookie poster.
Somehow I have a real problem trying to watch kindergarten, 1st, 2nd grade, etc, young students directly assaulting teachers and special education assistants every day. Doesn’t happen. Well, in your mind it does.
In any organization, police department, etc, all the workers know who the 1% of substandard workers are. In some orgainzations they are identified, retrained, counseled, given help. Correct the problem, they stay on the job. Sad to say HPD leadership has willfully failed to do their job.
This is why civilian oversight is required. Taking the discipline away from HPD, given to a disciplinary review board. 75% civilians, 25% HPD. Majority vote rules.
Well if you like have one shishi match, den I been stay ontop dees boad way mo’ longah dan you, brah. So no ACK!
You’re right about civilian oversight of HPD. Rytsuru’s right about the dangers that teachers face. Why do you arbitrarily limit your example only to teachers that are assaulted by their young pupils? “Parent vs. teacher” is far too common an occurrence to just conveniently ignore it:

And you surely realize that “domestic affrays” like this are notorious for how quickly they can become a cop’s nightmare.
As for your “teacher attacked by kindergartner” claim, here’s evidence that oh yes indeed, even that happens:

And here’s one teacher who was assaulted by — his principal!

What happened to the $150,000 spent by the police for public relations. More government waste like the rail???
Consultants went back to the mainland with their money laughing at the “little brown people on that island”
sucking up over a mailbox?
One year? This guy is still on probation. Get rid of him now before he does something to really hurt somebody.
HPD has a process. If he has over one year he has a lot more rights. Now, its a wait and see what will happen. They need a complete investigation, probably by Internal affairs. According to any bargaining agreement, he may or may not be subject to termination. As long as they play by the rules, thats good with me. BTW, they don’t let people side any more!
I wonder if a driver is Kathryn Xian? She was recently arrested as an Uber driver if I’m not mistaken.
She wasn’t arrested by HPD.
