A traffic camera at Ward Avenue showed vehicles backed up in the eastbound direction at about 5:30 p.m. before the Punahou offramp.

Honolulu police reopened the two right lanes of the H-1 freeway eastbound before the Punahou offramp after clearing the scene of a traffic accident.

The closure was reported at 5:10 p.m. and the lanes reopened by 5:45 p.m.

The Honolulu traffic information website shows an accident in the area at about 3 p.m.

Traffic reporter Danielle Tucker, who is at the city’s Traffic Information Center, tweeted that a vehicle overturned on the freeway and that traffic had backed up to Aiea, following the afternoon rush-hour crash.

How the hell did was he able to over turn his car in afternoon traffic? Stupid driver probably was texting. But still, how the hell he flipped?

  2. BigErn says:

It’s time to close that Piikoi on-ramp

    • kiragirl says:

Agree. 100% of those cars must merge left two lanes which impedes traffic flow.

If people used more aloha at that point and took turns letting the drivers on the ramp merge in, the traffic would move faster and more smoothly and safer. If you notice, the traffic opens up right after that point so the extra time letting someone in is very small. There are a lot of “me first” people who don’t like to let you in.

I believe there was another flipped auto on Kapiolani / Atkinson (son informed me)? Just how you flip it over never surprises me…maybe it was of our visitors who opted for the often famous U-turn on Kapiolani…happens a lot on the corridor from Keeaumoku to Atkinson. No details, hence it a not official.
