An Oahu resident hit a nearly $11 million jackpot on a penny slot machine over the weekend at Wynn Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Monday.
The woman was placing $3 wagers on an IGT Megabucks Wynn Wheel machine when the jackpot hit at about 9 p.m. Sunday, the paper said. The woman received $10,777,271.41, according to an IGT Jackpots tweet.
Shark sighting reported at Waikiki Beach
Lifeguards posted warning signs at Waikiki Beach on Monday after a 10- to 12-foot shark was seen lurking at the surf spot known as Publics.
Shayne Enright, spokeswoman of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department, said bystanders saw the aggressive shark following a turtle near the Kapahulu Groin about 20 feet from the shoreline before the shark swam away at about 10:30 a.m. The shark was then seen lingering around Publics, a surf spot about 200 yards from the shoreline.
Warning signs will remain posted until lifeguards check the waters this morning.
Maui fisherman injured in fall
Maui firefighters rescued a 61-year-old Kula fisherman who fell about 8 feet off a ledge Sunday at Waianapanapa State Park in East Maui and injured his head.
The incident occurred at 7:50 a.m., and the Maui Fire Department helicopter airlifted the victim and transferred him to paramedics waiting at a nearby landing zone at about 8:45 a.m.
Paramedics transported the fisherman to Hana Airport, where he was medevaced to Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious condition.
Police ID body found in ocean
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death of a 28-year-old homeless man whose body was found floating off the Hamakua Coast last week.
Hawaii County police identified the victim as Adam Hartzog, who had no permanent address but frequented the Hilo area.
His body was found Aug. 16. The case has been classified as a coroner’s inquest.
Officials urge water use limit
Maui County crews will be undertaking work on the Kula water system through Thursday.
The Department of Water Supply workers will be at the site from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.
Department officials are asking customers from Thompson, Kamaole and Kealakapu roads down to the Kanaio area to conserve water and to avoid any unnecessary water use while work is underway.
