Challen Faamatau rushed for 111 yards and three touchdowns as No. 7 Farrington overpowered No. 8 Kailua 42-7 on Saturday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.
The Governors improved to 2-0 in OIA Division I play behind a balanced attack that featured Justin Uahinui and Bishop Rapozo at quarterback.
“I feel great knowing we fixed all of our mistakes the best that we can. It’s a good win, but we can’t be satisfied. We’ve got to want more, knowing we’ve got Mililani next week,” Faamatau said. “This upcoming week is an important week.”
Eighth-ranked Kailua (1-1) got a bad break, literally, early in the game when quarterback Keoni Serikawa suffered a broken collarbone, according to Surfriders coach Joe Wong.
“It limits the passing. Without Serikawa, Mark (Lagazo) had to go out there on the fly. He gets reps at practice, but it’s totally different in a game,” Wong said. “Through the game, he progressed fine. He made some good throws and some good reads.”
Kailua got stellar efforts from Lagazo, who moved from running back to QB and finished with 43 hard-earned yards on 21 carries, and versatile Christian Mejia. The senior defensive end caused one fumble, recovered another and caught a touchdown pass just before halftime.
Faamatau was just one of several Governors to step up in a key OIA Red Division showdown, but he made the first big impact on the opening kickoff. His 61-yard return — he fell without being touched at the Kailua 36-yard line — set the tone. Five carries later, he plunged past the goal line on a 1-yard run to give the Govs the early lead.
Uahinui, who threw two TD passes, found Kingston Moses-Sanchez on a sideline route, and the 6-foot-2 speedster sprinted for a 33-yard touchdown, diving to the pylon.
“I could feel them on my tail,” he said.
That gave the Govs a 14-0 lead with 8:22 left in the first quarter.
With intermittent rain before and during the game, wet footballs became a factor. A bad snap to punter Alika Teramoto hit the ground, and when his knee touched the end-zone carpet, a safety was called. Farrington’s lead was 16 points with 2:07 to go in the opening quarter.
By then, Serikawa had quietly left the game and Lagazo was at quarterback. Both teams started to struggle with the snap and the problem never waned.
The Govs then got a big jolt when Uahinui read the secondary perfectly. He rifled a spiral to the left-side receiver, Mosi Alaivanu-Afe, who leaped for the catch and sprinted to paydirt for a 46-yard touchdown.
“We were on the right hashmark and I saw the safety right above the center,” said Uahinui, who was 4-for-7 for 102 yards. “It was a one-on-one matchup with the DB (for Alaivanu-Afe) and I let it go.”
