The Honolulu Board of Water Supply was expected to work late into Friday evening repairing a water main in Waipahu that residents’ videos showed spewing water on an apartment building.
The Board of Water Supply said crews were repairing the 8-inch main at 94-113 Pupupuhi St. that ruptured at 11 a.m. Friday.
Water service to 24 customers was expected to be restored Friday night.
BWS said it took at least an hour for crews to get to the scene and slowly turn the water off to prevent other breaks or other problems.
Lyft drivers arrested for permit violation
State Attorney General Department investigators arrested two Lyft drivers Thursday for allegedly providing commercial service at Honolulu Airport without the proper permit, according to the attorney general’s office.
The arrests were part of a state Department of Transportation investigation, according to attorney general’s spokesman Joshua Wisch. He identified the drivers as Antonio Quito and Kathryn Xian.
“The arrests were made because of multiple complaints that were made regarding this kind of activity occurring at the airport, despite citations having been previously issued,” Wisch said in an email Friday.
Camping frozen at Kanaha Park
The Maui County Parks Department is putting on indefinite hold all overnight camping permits at Kanaha Park for next month while the park is cleaned up.
Any overnight camping permits scheduled for after Aug. 31 will be refunded by the department, the county said in a news release Thursday.
Department officials have received complaints from park users, ranging from the dumping of large items like appliances and vehicles to the camping ground area being unsafe and unsanitary for overnight use.
Other issues stem from weekly police reports involving drunken and disorderly conduct, drug offenses, assaults and other incidents.
“This is a joint effort by the county and the state to clean up our park and make the area more secure, not just for park users but for the businesses nearby, including the rental car agencies and Kahului Airport,” said Parks Director Kaala Buenconsejo. “This is a well-used park, and the bottom line is it needs to be clean and safe for everyone.”
The Parks Department has been working with the community and park users for months to determine a plan for an improved Kanaha Park. Information gathered from the public determined that safety, security and unauthorized encampments were the biggest concerns, the news release said.
