Hilo’s B.J. Penn will fight Ricardo Lamas in the main event of UFC Fight Night: Manilla on Saturday, Oct. 15 in the Philippines, the UFC announced late Sunday night.

Penn (16-10-2, 12-9-2 UFC), who last fought in July 2014, will attempt his third comeback fight this year after bouts against Dennis Siver and Cole Miller were called off for different reasons.

Penn was forced to serve a six-month suspension after disclosing the usage of an IV in excess of 50 ML that is prohibited by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency in May.

His suspension is set to end just before the Oct. 15 fight date.

Lamas (16-5, 7-3) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Waianae’s Max Holoway in June and is currently ranked fourth in the UFC featherweight division.

The fight will take place at 145 pounds.

Penn, a former UFC world champion in two different weight classes, has lost his last three bouts and hasn’t won a fight since November 2010.

This guy is washed up, to many blow’s to the head, he is not disciplined enough to train hard to win.

  2. Morimoto says:

Seems like this guy is going down the road of Muhammad Ali.

  3. islandsun says:

No thanks. Fighting because he really needs the money. But he wont even train properly. White has a man crush on Penn.

  4. primo1 says:

UFC must be struggling if they have to settle for a guy who hasn’t fought in over two years and hasn’t won in nearly six to “headline” an event.

  5. Uch808 says:

Fighting at 145 lbs??? I’m guessing Penn normally walks around in at least 170. Making that weight must be incredibly difficult as it is. How can you train effectively and drop that much weight at the same time?

  6. KamIIIman says:

If by some miracle, he can train hard at work class level, he will be fun to watch but his weakness is conditioning in the past

  7. Tempmanoa says:

Does the boxing commission or other regulatory body regulate this? The boxing commission would stop fights like this to protect the public from wasting their money, to prevent depredation of the sport, and protect fighters from physical harm and prevent promoters from exploiting and abusing fighters.

This is the UFC we’re talking about, which obviously has ZERO concerns over any of the issues you mentioned if they’re headlining a has-been coming off a doping suspension. Average ticket price for a UFC event? Over $170 to see the equivalent of a barroom brawl.

    Hall of Famer.
