Swimmer Chen Xinyi of China, 2 others sanctioned for doping

China’s Chen Xinyi reacted after winning the women’s 50m freestyle swimming final at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea in Sept. 2014. The Chinese Swimming Association today said Chen Xinyi tested positive for the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide.

RIO DE JANEIRO » A Chinese swimmer, a Polish weightlifter and a Bulgarian steeplechaser were expelled or suspended today from the Olympics for doping, the first athletes sanctioned after failing drug tests at the games.

Weightlifter Tomasz Zielinksi and steeplechaser Silvia Danekova were kicked out of the games after testing positive for banned substances, the Court of Arbitration for Sport said.

Swimmer Chen Xinyi accepted a “provisional suspension” after testing positive for a diuretic. CAS said her case will continue, with a final decision to be issued before the end of the games.

The 18-year-old Chen’s Olympics were over anyway. She finished fourth Sunday in the 100-meter butterfly and pulled out before today’s 50-meter freestyle, her final event of the games.

These were the first decisions issued by CAS, which is handling doping cases at the Olympics for the first time. The International Olympic Committee handed over responsibility to CAS in a bid to make the process more independent.

Chen tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide, which is listed by the World Anti-Doping Agency as a “specified substance.” Athletes testing positive for those substances can receive reduced penalties because of the possibility the drug was taken inadvertently.

“The athlete accepted a provisional suspension on a voluntary basis,” CAS said of Chen. “As a consequence, the athlete is provisionally suspended from competing at the Olympic Games. The procedure will continue and the CAS (anti-doping division) will issue a final award before the end of the games.”

Zielinski, who was scheduled to compete in the 94-kilogram division, tested positive for the steroid 19-Norandrosterone, while Danekova tested positive for EPO, a blood-boosting hormone that aids stamina and endurance.

Both were excluded from the games and stripped of their Olympic accreditation. Their cases were handed over to their international federations for possible further sanctions. Both could face two-year bans.

Danekova, 33, was not considered a medal contender in the steeplechase, which starts with heats Saturday.

Zielinski already had been sent home from Rio after his positive test. Today the Polish weightlifting federation said his brother, Tomasz, a gold medalist at the 2012 London Olympics, tested positive for the steroid nandrolone in Poland on July 1 and faces being sent home from Rio.

    Surprise, surprise.

How rewarding can it be to “earn” an award knowing you had to cheat to get it? It all comes down to $$$

Ask Alex Rodriguez and all the other millionaire druggies in baseball, football, basketball, cycling, etc. They’ll gladly do it again as they laugh all the way to the bank. The whole Olympic ideals PR is nonsense. It’s all about the money and has been that way for decades now.

  3. kiragirl says:

In any sport, using a banned substance is illegal so for an athlete to do so, shows the integrity and character of that person. What a disgrace to the country that athlete represents.

    • cojef says:

State sponsored cheating recognized in certain parts of the globe? Winning is the goal, no matter the how? Even the Games, which was supposed to be about athleticism is strictly for money. Bribery precludes all negotiations where games are to be held. Promoters hope of enriching themselves.

  4. MsMoon says:

I take the same thing for my high blood pressure and it doesn’t help me swim any faster.

  5. jdarnall808 says:

Does not matter at this point. The United States is kicking everyone’s ass at swimming this Olympics.

    • HawaiiCheeseBall says:

That’s kind of what I was thinking. she’s not even good a cheating. i mean if you are going to use a banned substance at least finish high enough to get a medal.

  6. Txpyer says:

The sad thing is that another swimmer could’ve moved up the ranks to semi-finals and finals.

  7. Upperkula says:

Wow, a water pill, I guess no peeing in the pool.

  8. shayarai says:

How does taking a diuretic make you swim any faster?

    • South76 says:

getting rid of excess water makes you lighter and less weight to haul around as you swim, does that explain it?

    • Cellodad says:

HCTZ and increased urination can mask other markers for substances such as steroids. (In sports like boxing, wrestling, and judo, it can affect weight class) Possible side effects can be serious in endurance sports.

    • Blunt says:

Lasix (Furosemide) is a diuretic widely used in Congestive Heart Failure in humans. Also very popular in horse racing. Less pulmonary edema and can breathe better. Less pulmonary bleeding and coughing up blood. Can be useful for non-medical use for travelers who find themselves coughing after long airplane rides in pressurized cabins. They think they got a flu, but it really is caused by air pressure changed for long rides. You could ask your doctor for Furosemide or just buy it abroad where doctor’s prescriptions are not required. Visit Canada, Thailand., and other places. The American requirement for a doctor’s prescription is a ripoff. Google Diuretics if you want to know more. Oh yeah, you will need to take Postassium supplements with this class of drug.

    • mineeyes says:

      C’mon, increased urination=Jet Propulsion!

  9. South76 says:

All the athletes competing should be drug tested before and after each competition to see who is cheating the game. All those tested positive should be stripped of any medals earned while on drugs and banned from the game they cheated for life—hopefully this will discourage others from cheating.

  10. Leewardboy says:

Athlete’s should be allowed to use whatever they want – that’s the best way to level the playing field (sorry).

This continual hunt for “cheaters” is out of hand. Would high altitude training to increase red blood cells be cheating? Many athletes would not be able to find a suitable location or equipment to take advantage of this type of training – so should it be banned?

I think the whole medal race and competition at the Olympics has destroyed the original spirit of the Games.

    YMMV

    • Tanuki says:

That sentiment is not uncommon. If it comes to that, however, then the athlete becomes irrelevant. The competition will come down to who has the better chemist. And if you accept even that, then what about exoskeleton robotic body parts? PODs are not the same as different training techniques.

      • On_My_Turf says:

Then it becomes who can handle more drugs before their body says no more. I do not see the difference between that and the extreme workouts competitive athletes do.

  11. justmyview371 says:

No Cheating. Cheating is only allowed in politics, business and everything else in life. If people perform better with drugs, let them use them.

I’m in my mid 60s and I would love to get my hands on steroids, HGH, marijuana, and other proven medicinal drugs that can help me ward off joint aches, body soreness, and speed up recovery from small injuries all us older people suffer through. Almost all the other old guys I play tennis and golf with feel the same way.

      • Cellodad says:

Tip: If you have lower back pain, you might want to try the Direct Therapy TENS device. It doesn’t work for everyone but in my case, I’ve had lower back pain that extended all the way down my right leg for decades. (The Ironman bike legs were five or six hours of pure agony) I’ve been using it for three weeks, three times per day and the difference is just amazing. As I said, these devices don’t work for everyone but in my case, the change is phenomenal.

      • kk808 says:

Oxtail01, have you tried Joint Soother? Works wonders for me.

        • oxtail01 says:

No back problem but my elbow hurts like hell when playing tennis so have to lay off right now. Took one cortisone shot, looking to get another. Really could use some medical pakalolo.

One Korean lady is trying to sell me the suction cup therapy set that’s all a rage now with the US swimmers in Rio.
