A man who apparently drowned Wednesday while swimming in the Wailuku River in Hilo has been identified as Alejandro Barrios Sr., 41, of Orange, Calif., Hawaii County police said Thursday.
In response to a 3:45 p.m. call reporting a drowning, police determined that Barrios had been near a waterfall in the river when he appeared to have trouble swimming. His relatives attempted to assist him to shore but were unsuccessful and called 911, police said.
Fire rescue personnel found his body and brought him to shore with the use of a helicopter.
Barrios was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7:54 p.m.
Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The case is classified as a coroner’s inquest.
