Central East Maui’s rally falls short
Central East Maui’s rally in the bottom of the sixth inning fell short in a 14-11 loss to Chula Vista, Calif., on Thursday at the Little League (ages 11-12) West Regional in San Bernardino, Calif.
Central East Maui scored six runs in the sixth and had the tying run at the plate before a Chula Vista reliever came on and ended it with a strikeout.
Wehiwa Aloy batted 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Davin Lewis went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs for Central East Maui.
Central East Maui (2-1) will face Nevada today at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2. On Sunday, Central East Maui beat Nevada 8-0.
The winner of today’s game will face Chula Vista (3-0) for the title on Saturday.
Hawaii Diamonds to play for fifth place
Connor Dempsey pitched a three-hitter and Kaiden Sonoda-Fukumoto and Skyler Unebasami both drove in two runs as the Hawaii Diamonds beat South Bend, Ind., 9-3 on Thursday at the 10U Cal Ripken World Series in West Palm Gardens, Fla.
The Hawaii Diamonds (4-2) will face Bryant, Ark., today for the fifth-place “Iron Bracket” title.
On Wednesday, Ridge Choy pitched a five-hitter with eight strikeouts in the Hawaii Diamonds’ 3-2 victory over Mineral Area, Mo.
Thunder Baseball wins 13U opener
Kelena Sauer allowed one hit over six-plus innings with six strikeouts and Michael Yamaguchi batted 3-for-3 with a double as Thunder Baseball (Hawaii) defeated Meridian, Miss., 3-0 on Thursday at the 13U Babe Ruth World Series in Ottumwa, Iowa.
Sauer didn’t allow a hit until a leadoff single in the seventh for Thunder Baseball (1-0). Jaron Yoshikane then came on and retired three consecutive batters for the save.
Dorian surfs to victory in Maldives
Shane Dorian beat Jamie O’Brien 16.24 to 14.00 in an all-Hawaii final at the Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy on Thursday in Kuda Huraa, Maldives.
Dorian won the event, which employs single-fin, twin-fin and thruster, for the second consecutive year.
In the semifinals, Jamie O’Brien beat South Africa’s Travis Logie 16.43 to 14.97 and Dorian defeaed Rob Machado of the United States 18.84 to 18.00
