Big Isle visitor dies in apparent drowning
A 42-year-old visitor apparently drowned Wednesday in the Wailuku River, Hawaii island authorities said.
Police said the man, who is from the mainland, was swimming when he began to have trouble.
The incident happened about 3:45 p.m. in the upper Wailuku River in Kaumana, firefighters said.
Firefighters said they responded to an area known as “Narnia” and found three people on the riverbank who said a family member jumped in the water and was having difficulty swimming. The family members said they jumped in to try to save the man, but couldn’t hold onto him.
Firefighters conducted a free dive search and found the man in about 30 feet of water on the river bottom. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
