Ryan Johnson started hot and never cooled, passing for 341 yards and six touchdowns in the first half as Pac-Five overwhelmed McKinley 49-0 on Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at Aiea High School field.
“It’s a good start. We executed well in some areas. Some other areas we need work,” Wolfpack coach Kip Botelho said. “Our offensive line gave our quarterback a lot of time to throw the ball. In fact, both fronts, offensive and defensive, played well. We’ve got two sophomores up there, and a junior.”
McKinley managed to gain 43 yards of total offense.
Johnson was 19-for-30 in the first half, guiding the Wolfpack to scoring drives in their first four possessions. He found Matthew Lee for a 16-yard touchdown pass to open the game. After Pac-Five recovered a pooch kickoff, Johnson lobbed a 6-yard scoring pass to former quarterback Kainoa Ferreira.
“They’ve been playing together since intermediate. Ryan won the job in preseason. Kainoa’s great about it. He can play everywhere and contribute. He’s an asset to our team,” Botelho said.
Ferreira was a cornerstone for Pac-Five, returning punts for big gains. He had another TD haul in the second quarter, a smooth one-handed snag on a skinny post route deep down the hash marks for 36 yards.
Johnson found running back A.J. Ulufale for a 55-yard scoring play, and then Travis Kaloa for a 15-yard TD toss as the Wolfpack took a 28-0 lead into the second quarter.
Pac-Five led 42-0 at halftime. Ferreira, the backup QB, saw some action there after halftime and threw a TD pass before Pac-Five went almost exclusively to the ground during mercy-rule time.
Pac-Five’s Kuali‘i Park finished with 15 carries for 77 yards.
