Gov. David Ige will discuss the proposed Thirty Meter Telescope, homelessness and other pressing issues with East Hawaii residents from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
The town hall meeting will be held in the UCB Building (301) at UH-Hilo. It’s free and open to the public.
The meeting is one of several happening at UH campuses around the state this summer.
Ige wants to meet residents — especially young people — to discuss his administration’s long-range initiatives and solicit questions and concerns from the community, according to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.
“We want the voice of the people, not just those who are (older) but young people,” said Wil Okabe, East Hawaii liaison for Ige. “We want to encourage the young people to come, too.”
Around 140 people attended a similar meeting in Kona in June, Okabe said. East Hawaii’s event might draw even more, he said, because of local interest in TMT and issues on Mauna Kea.
The meeting will include “breakout sessions” assigned to these rooms: Department of Land and Natural Resources, UCB Room 100; Agriculture and Health departments, Campus Center Building, Room 301; Department of Transportation, UCB Room 127; homelessness, Campus Center Room 306.
Landslide shuts Kuhio Highway
Kauai police closed Kuhio Highway near the Hanalei Bridge on Saturday after a landslide covered the road.
The highway was closed in both directions at about 4:30 p.m., Kauai County said by email.
A state Department of Transportation crew was on scene to clear the debris.
