Graduate transfer Davis Webb has been named California’s starting quarterback for this month’s season opener against the University of Hawaii.

They play Aug. 26 in Sydney, Australia.

UH is expected to name its starting quarterback next week.

“Davis’ maturity and knowledge of what we’re trying to do put him a little bit ahead of our other quarterbacks,” head coach Sonny Dykes said on the Golden Bears’ website. “He’s new to our program but he came in with three seasons of experience at Texas Tech running this style of offense. We wanted to work out the details of our offense and put all the pieces together, and the quarterback is a pretty important part of that.”

Webb, who enrolled at Berkeley in May, was eligible immediately having graduated from Texas Tech this year. At Cal he succeeds Jared Goff, the top overall pick in April’s NFL Draft.

Webb started 14 of the 23 games he played in over three seasons at Texas Tech and passed for 5,557 yards and 46 touchdowns.

“My job now is to prepare my best each day and do my job on game day,” Webb said on the school website. “I need to do everything I can so my teammates can enjoy success. We are all going to push each other every day to improve as individuals and as a team. That is what a championship culture looks like and that is what coach Dykes is developing here.”

Webb succeeds Jared Goff, the No. 1 overall pick by the Los Angeles Rams in this year’s NFL draft.

Webb has big shoes to fill at Cal, where Goff set school records for yards passing (12,200), completions (977) and touchdown passes (96). Goff improved every season and finished last season with career highs of 4,719 yards passing, a Pac-12 record 43 touchdown passes, 64.5 percent completion rate and a 161.3 passer rating.
