Several thousand people are expected to join the American Heart Association’s free Oahu Heart Walk on Aug. 13 at Kapiolani Park.
The event is designed to bring families together to learn healthful lifestyle habits.
Interested walkers can register by going online at oahuheartwalk.org or by calling 377-6638. Last-minute walkers can register on-site the day of the walk, starting at 6:30 a.m.
The noncompetitive walk starts at 7:30 a.m., and participants can choose between a family-friendly 4.5-mile walk around Diamond Head and a 1-mile walk around Kapiolani Park.
A celebration will follow the walk and include free health screenings, education tables, a chance to learn CPR and a keiki fun tent. There will be live entertainment and health snacks.
Suicide awareness walk Sept. 17
Raising awareness about the devastating toll of suicide will be the focus of the Out of Darkness Honolulu Community Walk on Sept. 17 at Ala Moana Beach Park.
There is no cost for the walk, which goes from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Entertainment and a resource fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Registration can be done before the walk by going online to bit.ly/2afhlnd. Same-day registration starts at 8 a.m. at the park.
The 2.9-mile walk starts at Magic Island and goes around the entire park.
More than 100,000 people nationwide will participate this fall in similar walks sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
An estimated 1 million people in the U.S. attempt suicide every year, with someone succeeding every 13 minutes. In Hawaii suicide is the 10th leading cause of death.
