Time is running out for Hawaii residents with at least 50 percent Japanese ancestry to submit an application for the 65th Cherry Blossom Festival.
For the first time, women who are 27 or 28 years old may apply. The age limit had been 26.
According to festival organizers, Cherry Blossom Queen contestants are selected “for their dedication to perpetuating Japanese culture, commitment to education and passion for community service.”
Over the course of several months, those selected to compete in the festival pageant take part in cultural activities like taiko drumming, traditional Japanese tea ceremony, bon dance and calligraphy.
Next year’s Cherry Blossom Festival queen will be selected in March during the festival’s annual gala event and coronation ceremony.
For consideration, applicants must complete a registration form, provide relevant documentation and pay a $30 application fee. Entries must be postmarked by Monday.
