Amy Schumer caused a whirl of excitement at A Cup of Tea in Kailua on Saturday. “She flew in like a bat out of hell and bought about $300 worth of merchandise off the shelves in about five minutes or less,” said Darlene Pahed, owner of the Victorian tearoom and boutique. “She was very nice.” Amy asked a young girl in the shop to wear some of the merchandise she bought and pose for a picture with her and her friend. Amy let the little girl keep the goods she wore. Amy and her girlfriend then hit the tearoom and left a $200 tip on a $20 bill. Amy was nominated last week for a best actress Emmy for her comedy series “Inside Amy Schumer” on Comedy Central. One of my favorite TV shows is “The Americans” on FX so naturally I was happy when the series and its stars, Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell, were nominated last week for Emmys …
ONWARD: I saw three movies this month that have received a good chunk of hype and publicity. “The Infiltrator” and “The Legend of Tarzan” were winners but I was disappointed in “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates,” which was filmed here. “Mike and Dave” stars Zac Efron, Adam Devine, Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza. The comedy was supposed to be filled with laugh-out-loud situations. I did not laugh out loud much.
Bryan Cranston as an undercover federal drug agent is outstanding in “Infiltrator,” as is Diane Kruger, who portrays another undercover agent acting as his fiancee. They work together to bring down Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar’s money-laundering scheme. It’s a thriller based on a true story. Benjamin Bratt and John Leguizamo are key players. Kruger is Town & Country magazine’s August cover girl.
In “Tarzan” I wanted to see how Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgard stacked up against earlier Tarzans Johnny Weissmuller and Lex Barker. Skarsgard is an excellent Tarzan. The Swede does very well swinging high in the air on long, strong vines, showing his love for animals and natives in the Congo, and fighting when necessary. Margot Robbie, who portrays his wife, Jane, tells her kidnapper, played by Christoph Waltz, that he will not enjoy what Tarzan will do to him when he finds him. Samuel L. Jackson plays a Tarzan ally in the exciting adventure story. Robbie is Vanity Fair’s August cover girl …
Outrigger Enterprises’ public relations director, Nancy Daniels, 60, is retiring Aug. 1 after 21 years with the company. She was at the Kahala Hilton for eight years before joining Outrigger. Monica Salter has joined Outrigger from the Bennet Group as vice president of corporate communications to head PR efforts on Nancy’s departure. Nancy and her husband, Dan Daniels, will move to Milwaukie, Ore., on Aug. 8. They have already purchased a home there. Her sister, Betty Walls, lives near Milwaukie in Happy Valley, Ore. The sisters’ mom, Winnie Almeida, is now living with Betty and her family. Nancy was born and raised in Kaneohe and is a graduate of St. Francis High School. “The Kelley family and my Outrigger ohana have been tremendously generous over the years,” Nancy said. “The Kahala is where it all began. I have to thank general manager Louis Finamore for seeing the potential in me. After a year of working in the executive office as a secretary, he offered me the hotel’s PR position. That was nearly 30 years ago. I can’t imagine what my life would be like now if I had said no!” …
