A 45-year-old Kauai man fatally shot his ex-wife in front of their 9-year-old daughter and then killed himself late Monday, police said.

Kauai police identified the 42-year-old woman as Celestae Gibbons and her ex-husband as Justin Gibbons. The couple had divorced last month.

Court records show Celestae Gibbons filed for divorce in November. A judge granted the divorce June 16, awarding her custody of their daughter.

According to police, at about 10 p.m. Monday, when Celestae Gibbons and the girl arrived at their Puhi residence, Halelani Village condominiums, Justin Gibbons approached her after she exited her vehicle. The child remained in the back seat.

Police said an argument ensued outside the vehicle, and Justin Gibbons shot Celestae Gibbons, who then ran to a nearby apartment. Justin Gibbons followed her inside the apartment and shot her again, according to police. He then ran out of the complex and fatally shot himself.

Both Celestae and Justin Gibbons were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their daughter was not injured and is now in the custody of state Child Welfare Services, according to Kauai County officials. Kauai police are continuing their investigation.

Celestae Gibbons worked as an office coordinator at Lihue Dental. She was born and raised in Oklahoma and a graduate of The Oklahoma Dental Assisting Program, according to the dental office’s website.

“She was very punctual, friendly and strikingly beautiful,” said Dr. Terry Allen of Lihue Dental in a phone interview. “She’s just a wonderful, great mother and worked really hard to provide for her family.” He added that she had moved to Kauai about two to three years ago.

Celestae Gibbons will be remembered for her generosity and loving and caring nature, Allen said. “This is a very tragic day.”
