Redford High graduate Akalaini “Bui” Baravilala has been named to the U.S. Women’s Eagles rugby team that will compete in next month’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The 25-year-old Baravilala, a fullback who played locally for the Aliamanu All Blues, is one of 12 players on the roster. It is the first time that Rugby Sevens is in the Olympics — men’s 15-a-side was played in four Games between 1900 and 1920 — and the first time that women are competing in the sport.
Baravilala has been in the U.S. rugby pipeline since 2010 and began residency at the Olympic Training Center in 2012. She has played in 15 international tournaments and in 2012 was named the Player of the Tournament in both the Amsterdam Sevens and the Guangzhou Zengcheng Women’s Invitational in China.
