I’m a born-and-raised island girl, and I like to shop local whenever I can. Hawaii Domestic Market sells creative clothing and accessories that capture the island spirit. Some designs like the sust-‘AINA-bility hat remind us to take care of the islands, while stickers with localized “Star Wars” motifs, right, allow me to embrace the hype with a Hawaii twist. T-shirts, like the one pictured at right, are $26 and stickers $4 at Butigroove, 1311 Kapiolani Blvd. Other Hawaii Domestic Market merchandise is sold at Island Snow, HIC Surf, Pioneer Saloon and online at hawaiidomesticmarket.com. — Jermel-Lynn Quillopo, Honolulu
Misting sunscreen protects makeup, too
Sunscreen is no longer a one-size-fits-all deal. I’ve got a pricier one that I use in the morning before work (Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer) that soaks in well before I apply makeup, and a cheap but effective formula (Honest Mineral Sunscreen) that I use for the beach and baseball games. And now I have one that transitions with my ever- changing plans.
Supergoop Defense Refresh Setting Mist with Rosemary is a sheer spray that sets my makeup instead of smearing it, while giving me broad-spectrum SPF 50 coverage. It keeps me from muddying up my powder and spreading blush sparkles everywhere on those days I have to run from the office to the park, or vice versa. Try it at Sephora, $12 for a 1-ounce bottle or $28 for 3.4 ounces. — Donica Kaneshiro
Shop turns photos into wearable art
Island Sole, which has made an art of slipper making, is now making slippers into art. Just bring in your favorite digital photo and the store will transfer the image onto a pair of slippers for $29.95. You can wear them or leave them in the rubber mold to hang on your wall. For another $125 you can get your footwear artistically framed. These and other personalized art pieces are available only at the Pacific Beach Hotel location, 2490 Kalakaua Ave.; call 739-7500. — Steven Mark
Pencil stubs help your garden grow
If you’ve got a kindergartner in the house like I do, you’ve probably got a good collection of pencils for homework. I love Sprout pencils because when they get too stubby to use, you can stick them in the garden and a plant will grow. The plantable pencils, dreamed up by three Massachusetts Institute of Technology students, are made from Forest Stewardship Council-certified cedar wood, clay and graphite, and contain a seed capsule on the end. My son calls them “magic pencils.”
A veggie three-pack of pencils (cherry tomato, red cayenne and sweet pepper) costs $7.50; an eight-pack that includes basil, thyme, mint and vegetables is $17.95. Colored pencils are also available. Find them at sproutworld.com. — Nina Wu
Handy drink mixes add flavor to plain old water
I know I need to drink more water, but it’s always hard for me to guzzle something without any flavor. For years I stuck with sports drinks and other powdered mixes filled with extra sugar and artificial ingredients as my go-to when I got thirsty. That was until I discovered the True Lemon lineup of powdered drink mixes.
My favorite is the original lemonade flavor made with crystallized lemon, lemon oil and stevia leaf extract. Each 10-calorie drink packet is designed to be mixed with 16 ounces of water and provides 100 percent of the daily recommended vitamin C with just 1 gram of sugar per serving. True Lemon products are available in 10-count boxes at local retailers like Safeway, Target and Walmart, but I buy mine online from Amazon.com for $12.80 per 30-count box. — Jason Genegabus
