Hawaii voter registration deadline approaching
The deadline to register to vote in the Hawaii primary election is approaching.
The Office of Elections says July 14 is the last day to register for the August 13 primary.
Voters will choose mayors for Oahu and Hawaii Island. In both races, any candidate who gets more than half the vote in the primary will be deemed elected. If no candidate gets a majority, the top two vote-getters will face off in November.
Incumbents U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz and U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard will face challengers. And 10 candidates will compete for outgoing U.S. Rep. Mark Takai’s seat.
State senators and representatives also face elections, although 16 of those races are uncontested.
There also will be elections for county councilmembers, county prosecutors and Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustees.
