The U.S. remained unbeaten in the XV Pan-American Cup volleyball tournament on Tuesday, sweeping Costa Rica in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Incoming University of Hawaii senior opposite Nikki Taylor had two kills in the 25-16, 26-10, 25-18 win at the Club San Carlos. The U.S. (4-0) concludes pool play today against Argentina (3-1).

U.S. junior men win volleyball opener

Incoming University of Hawaii freshman Austin Matautia shared team-high honors with eight points and Rainbow Warrior rising sophomore setter Joe Worsley added a team-high three blocks as the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team opened the NORCECA Under-21 Continental Championship for volleyball with a sweep of Barbados in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.

Matautia (Moanalua), an outside hitter, played in Sets 2 and 3, finishing with seven kills and a block. Worsley played in all three sets, including all of Sets 2 and 3, and added one kill in the 25-15, 25-15, 25-16 win.

The U.S. concludes pool play against St. Vincent on Thursday. The quarterfinals begin Friday in the qualifier for the 2017 FIVB U21 World Championship in Brno, Czech Republic.

Two bronze medals for Spike & Serve

Ryan Wilcox was named to the all-tournament team as Spike & Serve Volleyball Club finished third in the 16 Open division at the Boys Junior National Championship in Dallas.

Spike & Serve (8-2) lost in the semifinals to eventual champion The HBC, 17-25, 25-18, 15-13. Members of the team coached by Diana McKibbin were Race Agcaoili, Kana’i Akana, Robert Allen, Ryan Hong, Justin Manson, Jameson McKibbin, Dru Pang, Hauolikaukaliokalanakila Sturm and Wilcox. Maddison and Riley McKibbin were the assistants.

Spike & Serve also took bronze in the 12 Club division. Members of the team coached by Rick Tune were Kanalu Akana, Teke Bower, Emanuele Clini, Camden Fujimoto, Riley Haine, Xander Pink, Keau Thompson, Aiden Tune and Roman and Van Romanowski.
