Kamehameha graduate Micah Christenson put down the match-winning kill as the U.S. men’s national volleyball team rallied to defeat Bulgaria 3-1 in World League play on Friday in Dallas.
Christenson, the starting setter, finished with three kills, two blocks and four digs in addition to 27 assists in the 23-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-21 victory at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Center. Libero Erik Shoji (Punahou) had a match-high 11 digs for the Americans, who improved to 6-1.
Reserve setter Kawika Shoji (‘Iolani) did not play.
Bulgaria (0-7) led by as much as 10-3 in Set 4 before the U.S. tied it at 15.
The U.S. will play Australia (0-7) today and Russia (4-3) on Sunday to conclude the final round of pool play.
Richmond places 26th at swim trials
Seabury Hall graduate Renny Richmond placed 26th overall in the men’s 100 butterfly event at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials on Friday, the highest finish of three competitors with Hawaii ties in Omaha, Neb.
Richmond, an incoming senior at Arizona, was timed in 53.61 seconds, two seconds off the winning time of Matthew Josa. Richmond also swam the 50 freestyle, placing 89th overall in 23.33. Caeleb Dressel won the event in 21.76.
Also Friday, University of Hawaii rising sophomore Micah Ornelas finished 88th in the 100 fly (55.06) and Kamehameha graduate Kanoa Kaleoaloha, a rising sophomore at Florida State, was 158th in the 50 free (24.01).
