Police charge suspect in death of man crushed by own car

Violet George and Kyen Knowles, the father of her three children, are shown with two of their children on Halloween of 2010.

A 33-year-old Pearl City man was charged Sunday in connection with the death of a man pinned under his car last week in Kalihi.

Brandon Reis, of Komo Mai Drive, was charged about 6 p.m. with manslaughter, first-degree terroristic threatening, and three firearms offenses. He was being held at the main police cell block with a $1 million bail.

Reis is expected to appear in District Court on Monday.

Kyen Knowles, 36, died Wednesday of mechanical asphyxia after he was pinned under his 1991 Lexus sedan on Waterhouse Street between Kopke Street and Gulick Avenue.

Family members said Knowles had gotten into an argument at a fast-food restaurant while picking up food for his kids and on his way home someone fired a gun at him on Waterhouse.

His death certificate reveals that someone shot at Knowles, prompting him to try to get out of the car. Police said the car was still in reverse and struck Knowles, pinning him under a tire. He had no gunshot wound.

Knowles, who lived just two blocks from the scene, is survived by three young children.

Awful, simply awful. Three young kids left without a dad. Heart-breaking.

agree…Tragic. Please restrict guns and clamp down on people bringing them in to MacDonald’s. This kind of thing is more common of Texas than Hawaii. Scary.

What a dumb reason to cause the death of another man. So, killer, did he cut in line? Did he step on your toe and fail to apologize? Did he give you the stink eye? Did he make a remark you didn’t like? Did he utter a racist remark? Did you just not like this total stranger? Or did you know him? What could he ever have done to disrespect you? What is the reason?

Hawaii is just as bad as anyplace else now. Aloha lives only in the minds of dreamers

Can someone start a fundraising website for us that don’t know how? Please…Mahalo.

  6. Pocho says:

Since the Democrats are doing a sit-in. Can the SA find out if the gun used in this incident was legally registered? You’d think the SA would say so as it’s a BIG talking point in the House

  7. Pocho says:

Brandon Reis has a criminal history: http://www.staradvertiser.com/breaking-news/waianae-man-to-appear-in-court-over-armed-robbery/ impersonating an officer robbing old folks. I’d sue the State of Hawaii for not keeping Reis locked up! Hawaii’s Liberal Justice system is to blame for this incident.

Poncho thank you for that link. Article was dated January 25, 2013. Wonder what other kine trouble dear Brandon caused in that three year timeframe.

As RetiredWorking posted: “What a dumb reason to cause the death of another man?”

Put Brandon Reis away for life!

“Violet George and Kyen Knowles, the father of her three children”>>>Is it wrong for me to suspect welfare fraud when I see this kind of relationship? Was this whole story the result of the welfare lifestyle?

  9. stanislous says:

    How do you spell… “d e a t h p e n e l t y”? Or for you liberals… “Three Strikes, and your OUT”

  10. HawaiiCheeseBall says:

Geez, a father of three dies because of an argument at a burger joint. People take life too lightly. Condolences to his ohana.
