Former University of Hawaii diver QiongJie Drew advanced to the finals of the women’s 3-meter springboard event at the USA Olympic Diving Trials in Indianapolis on Tuesday.
Drew, who won an NCAA championship during her college career and is a member of the UH Circle of Honor, was 10th after the preliminaries and jumped to fifth after the semifinal round with a total of 605.60. Kassidy Cook leads the event with a score of 660.85 followed by Abby Johnson at 626.55. The top two after the finals earn spots on the Olympic team. Drew turned in the highest scoring dive of the day, a 3 1/2 pike that earned a score of 79.05.
The finals will be held Sunday at the IUPUI Natatorium and will be televised on NBC at 10:30 a.m. UH coach Mike Brown will coach Drew in the finals.
Kanaka Ikaika hosts combined crew race
Moku Manu Hoe Wa‘a, an outrigger canoe race for combined youth and adult crews, is scheduled for July 10.
Hosted by the Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association, the race begins at 10 a.m. at Waimanalo Beach Park and finishes at Kualoa Beach Park. The event calls for nine-person crews with a minimum of four junior (18-and-under) paddlers with open-water crew changes.

Rigsbee to be honored by Tinman triathlon
The Tinman triathlon will add a first responder division in honor of the late Cliff Rigsbee, a firefighter who died earlier this month following a training accident.
Tinman organizers said the “Cliff Rigsbee Trophy” will be awarded beginning with next year’s event. Rigsbee, who died June 16, was a nationally ranked triathlete who had won the Tinman several times.
This year’s 36th Tinman is set for July 24 in Waikiki and includes a 700-meter swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride and 10-kilometer run. Entry fees are $120 per individual and $150 for a three-person team through June 30.
