Although this incident was not at a traffic light intersection, get rid of those countdown timers. Also, install brighter lights at intersections and where there are crosswalks.

      when will the slaughter end?

      • aomohoa says:

Slaughter implies, it was intentional. Considering you have been a student at college for the last 10 years you think you would have a better command of the English language.

    • aomohoa says:

I think the counter down timers are great. I think part of the problem is that in the old days people would stop when a senior crossed the street and they knew it. Now a days you need to make sure you make eye contact with the driver and they are stopping for sure. Everyone is preoccupied on cellphones, etc.

      • kiragirl says:

Countdown timers are misunderstood. If there weren’t any, pedestrians would not start to cross because they do not know when the light will turn red, which could be the next second.

I think countdown timers are death traps. They are confusing to most locals and especially tourists. People see two seconds left and they march into the crosswalk. It really means you have two seconds to live before the opposing traffic gets their green and mows you down. They should be changed to go or no go.

        • sailfish1 says:

Without the countdown timer, a person doesn’t even know how many seconds are left. The person will start to cross and the signal will change.

How confusing can the countdown timers be? It’s almost elementary what it means. If people don’t understand they better start asking someone.

The countdown timer is a good feature.

Without a countdown timer, a person could start to cross and then the signal changes to stop. So what does he do while he is halfway across the street? Whatever he does, he is not in a good position.

With the countdown timer, at least the person knows how much time is left before he starts to cross.

Thoughts with victim and Family and Friends. I will be forwarding a recommendation to my Council member to ask if we can have a coordinated effort to have media conduct a education blitz on pedestrian safety. Combine this with a diligent law enforcement, which in my opinion is lacking for both operators of vehicles (auto, cyclist, etc.) and pedestrians. One of the most effective cycling safety advice given to me was obeying laws while on the road maintain a level of predictability (i.e. entering crosswalk while countdown begins, using crosswalk, speed limit, etc.) and predictability minimizes an unfortunate incident.

The streets are dangerous for old people.

    • On_My_Turf says:

They are often their own worst enemy. Too many times, I see them step into the road, looking down at their feet and not towards oncoming traffic. All too easy for someone on their smartphone or in a hurry to run them over. Furthermore, I think it is time to get rid of all of the crosswalks without signal lights. They are not safe.

      • PMINZ says:

Reason I look at my Feet and not “Oncoming Traffic” is the roads have so very many pukas and irregular surface blemishes – If I do not constantly look at the road I WILL trip in the middle of the road. C&SC fix the roads and then I can watch the supposed Stopped traffic. Oh yes, but I do glance up over and over while crossing, And even look up at each lane as some do not even stop for the light. PS I wear Bi focals and can not see the street unless I look Down.

SA. Every pedestrian story you run should, at the very least, say if the victim was in or not in a crosswalk.

  5. truelies says:

    Countdown timers are irrelevant
in this situation, woman was walking on road, not in crosswalk!!!
